Ingredients

For the Dough:

4 cups all-purpose flour

1/4 cup granulated sugar

1 packet (2 1/4 tsp) active dry yeast

1 cup whole milk, warmed

1/2 cup unsalted butter, melted

2 large eggs

1/2 tsp salt

For the Filling:

3 medium apples, peeled and diced (Granny Smith or Honeycrisp recommended)

1/4 cup brown sugar

1 tsp ground cinnamon

1/4 cup chopped pecans or walnuts (optional)

2 tbsp unsalted butter, softened

For the Cream Cheese Frosting:

8 oz cream cheese, softened

1/2 cup unsalted butter, softened

2 cups powdered sugar

1 tsp vanilla extract

1-2 tbsp milk (to desired consistency)

Instructions

Prepare the Dough:

    - In a small bowl, combine warm milk, sugar, and yeast. Let it sit for about 5-10 minutes until it becomes frothy.

      - In a large mixing bowl, combine flour and salt. Make a well in the center and add the yeast mixture, melted butter, and eggs.

        - Mix until a soft dough forms. Knead on a floured surface for about 5-7 minutes until smooth and elastic.

          - Place the dough in a greased bowl, cover with a damp cloth, and let rise in a warm place for 1 hour or until doubled in size.

            Prepare the Filling:

              - In a mixing bowl, combine diced apples, brown sugar, cinnamon, and nuts if using. Toss until apples are well-coated. Set aside.

                Assemble the Rolls:

                  - Preheat your oven to 375°F (190°C).

                    - Once the dough has risen, punch it down and roll it out on a floured surface into a rectangle (about 16x24 inches).

                      - Spread the softened butter over the dough, leaving a small border around the edges.

                        - Evenly distribute the apple mixture on top of the buttered dough.

                          - Starting from one long side, roll the dough tightly into a log. Pinch the seams to seal.

                            - Cut the log into 12 even rolls and place them in a greased 9x13-inch baking dish. Cover and let rise for another 30 minutes.

                              Bake the Rolls:

                                - Bake in the preheated oven for 25-30 minutes, or until golden brown and cooked through.

                                  - Allow the rolls to cool slightly while you prepare the frosting.

                                    Prepare the Cream Cheese Frosting:

                                      - In a medium bowl, beat together softened cream cheese and butter until creamy and smooth.

                                        - Gradually add powdered sugar, mixing well. Stir in vanilla extract and enough milk to achieve a spreading consistency.

                                          Frost and Serve:

                                            - Generously spread the cream cheese frosting over the warm apple cinnamon rolls. Serve immediately and enjoy!
